トマティスとの出会いはインターネットです。（実は、この出会いのずっと前に、妻が日原先生とお会いしていたことが後で分かりましたが、その話はまた別の機会に）
どうしても自分の英語に満足できず、本を読み漁り、ネットを検索し、講座にも出たりしていました。そんなとき、無料の２文字に引かれて、当時市ヶ谷にあったトマティスでリスニング・チェック付きの無料体験説明会へ出かけました。そこで初めて目の当たりにしたのが、あのステレオのアンプのような「電子耳」です。（村瀬邦子著「最強の英語学習法」を読んでその存在は知っていました）
この「電子耳」がすごかった。
マイクとヘッドフォンを装着し、英文原稿を読むように言われます。読み上げる自分の声をマイクが拾い、「電子耳」を通り、ヘッドフォンで聴くという流れ。結局、自分の声を自分で聞きながら音読するのですが、途中、「電子耳」で音を変化させるのです。
まずは日本語のパスバンド（言語ごとの周波数帯）に「電子耳」が設定されます。いつものように英語を読み上げようとするのですが、なぜか舌がもたつき、カタカナ英語のような発音に。次に米語のパスバンドに「電子耳」が設定されると、今度は舌が軽やかに動き、ネイティブスピーカーのような発音に。
簡単に言うと、自分の英語発音のレベルが中高生のころに引き戻され、そして次の瞬間には、まだなったことのないネイティブレベルに連れて行かれた…そんな感じでした。この時に同時に「最強の英語学習法」で知ったパスバンドというものの存在に確信を持つことができました。
こうしてトマティスメソッドに確信を持ち、聴覚トレーニングを受けたのですが、次に驚かされた体験はトマティス理論の第２法則そのものでした。
「聴力の改善により、発声にも変化があらわれる」
聴覚トレーニング期間中のころだったと思うのですが、ふと気づいたら自分の[h]の発音の仕方が変わっていたのです。これは発音の仕方を変えようとして変えたのでなく、気づいたら変わっていたので驚きました。今までと違う[h]の音を聞くようになり、同じ音を出そうとして無意識に発音の仕方を変えていたのです。耳が声を先導する。だから英語の発音矯正も音の出し方を知っただけではだめ、最後は正しい音を耳でしっかり覚えましょうと言うようになりました。
あと聴覚トレーニングを終えて分かるようになって驚いたことは、同じ人の同じ英語でも聴く側の聴き方で違ったものに聴こえるということです。「最強の英語学習法」にも同じモーツァルトの曲を聴いても母語の違いによって人々は違う曲を聴いているという一節がありましたが、こういうことだったんだと納得しました。
たとえば子音同士を比べると、日本語よりも米語はもっと際立った音でやり取りが行われています。だから速く話してもコミュニケーションがスムーズに行われます。でも日本語を母語とする多くの人は、そのことに気づかず、そういう音を聞いていないので、聞き取りで苦労するんです。もし日本人がネイティブスピーカー２人の間にいれば、言わば頭越し（周波数の高いところで）に話が進むという感じでしょうか。
CAVは昨年（2008年）の夏に受けました。CAVを受けた理由の一番は探究心。英語をもっとよくしたい、声をもっとよくしたいというのもありました。
CAVのコースで忘れられないのは、骨導音に気導音を重ねた瞬間、色彩画のような美しさが聴こえたことです。
こうした骨導音と気導音の関係を含め、どのようにして人間の声が作られるかということが明確に理解できた…これが一番の収穫だったと思います。
そんな風に頭が整理されたせいでしょうか、CAVを終えた後、久しぶりに妻の声楽レッスンを受けたら今まで一番よかったと言われたのは本当に驚きでした。何年もレッスンを受けていなかったのです。だからこれはCAVの効用以外の何ものでもありません。
そして最後にもう一つ。いい声だと誉められることが多くなったこと。これもうれしい限りです。日原先生、ありがとうございました。
