はじめに
フランスの耳鼻咽喉外科医トマティス博士（1920年生まれ）は、聴覚障害者や歌唱障害者の専門医として活躍しながら、聴覚と声、聴覚と心理の関連を研究し、耳鼻咽喉学の領域を超えて聴覚が深くかかわる心身 医学、脳神経医学の分野までその研究を発展させました。博士は、好奇心が強く、専門外の分野にまで足を踏み入れ、しばしば医学会の異端児とみなされながらも、理論や研究のみにとどまらず、実際の治療に使用するトレーニング方法を考えました。
莫大な費用と 時間をかけて試行錯誤しながら、聴覚と発声を改善する音源ソフトとしてモーツアルトやグレゴリオ聖歌、トレーニング機器として開発した「電子耳」装置で今日のトマティスメソッドを確立しました。また、器官としての耳、宇宙と人間を結ぶ聴覚の仕組みを解明する本や、現在のモーツアルトの癒し効果のブームの きっかけを作った本は、あくまでも科学的、医学的でありながら人間の存在にかかわる深い哲学に裏打ちされていて、医学の門外漢である私たちにも感動を与え、人生を豊かなものにしてくれます。
＜「自分を聴き、他人を聴く耳」を持つ人がこの世に増えれば、 戦争は起きない＞と唱え続けた博士は惜しくも2001年12月25日に亡くなりましたが、半世紀の間に博士の業績を引き継ぐトマティスセンターは今では23ヶ国に上りました。世界中のセンターで聴覚の不全から生じる脳機能障害、聴覚過敏症、学習障害、発声障害などで過去にトマティスメソッドの恩恵を受けた人、これから受ける人の数は厖大になることでしょう。
トマティス博士なくしては、今もなお存在しないであろうトマティスメソッドの生い立ちは、まさにトマティス博士の人生そのものでした。これから、皆さんと一緒にこの「トマティス物語」で、波乱万丈の人生を送った博士の自叙伝「耳と人生」を読んでいきましょう。
