トマティストレーニング体験記
トマティス初体験の驚き
「最初と後では別人のようでしたね！」サンプルの英文を読み終えた私にデモンストレータから思わず口をついて出た言葉だ。私といっしょにトマティスメソッドを試している回りの人たちの顔にも「えっ」という驚きの表情が浮かんでいる。
これはトマティスメソッドの体験会での出来事、参加者は特殊なヘッドフォンをつけ、その操作によって、サンプルの短い英文を、最初は「日本人の耳」で読み、次に「英国人の耳」になって音読する。最初の体験者は私で、英国人の耳になって読んだ時は「おっ、速く読めるぞ」「子音が発音しやすい」と自分でも感じたが、本人よりもびっくりしたのは、私の音読を聞いていた周りの人のほうだったようだ。
「そうか、耳を変えれば、自分が話す英語も変わるんだ！」という発見に私はドキドキし始めた。これならいけるかもしれない。長年英語を学んできて、それなりにうまくはなったものの、自分の話す英語の発音にはとても満足しているとは言えなかった。やっぱり日本人英語の域をでない自分の発音に半ば諦めの気持ちでいた。留学経験も海外在住の経験もない、私の英語はメイドインジャパン、日本に居たってこれぐらいのレベルにはなるという見本だと居直ってみても、きれいな英語を話す人の前にでると、つい気後れがしてしまう。
なぜ自分の英語の発音がよくならないか？ 答ははっきりしていた。私は聴覚が鋭くないからだ。小学校時代は楽器がへたくそで演奏するふりをしてごまかしたことがよくあった。人と同じ練習時間ではぜったいに弾けるようにはならなかったものだ。家人はたまたま耳がいいので、私が気づかない小さな音も聞きつける、耳元でそんな大きな声で話さないでと言う。ふだん音楽を聞く習慣がないのもたぶん耳があまりよくないせいだろう。中学で初めて英語を習った時は、耳慣れない音にぜんぜんついていけず、中学生用の辞書に載っている発音記号の上のカタカナを書き写して発音を覚えていた。
そんな私でも英語は聞いて聞いて聞きまくる練習を重ねたおかげで、リスニングテストの成績はいいのは皮肉な話である。TOEICでは一度リスニングセクションで満点をとったことがある。音自体としてはよく聞こえなくても、文脈や文法知識でかなり補いがつき、話の要旨はつかめるものなのだ。だから情報量が多い英語ニュースの聞き取りはむしろやさしい。難しいのは映画やドラマ、何回聞いてもどうしても聞けないところが残る。ノンネイティブのリスニング力の限界ではないかと思うぐらいだ。
自分の話す英語をもっと英語らしくするには耳をよくするしかないだろうと以前から思っていた。でも耳をよくする？ 聴覚のよしあしなんて生まれつきのもののはずだ、おいそれとよくなるわけがないと思った。英語が話されている土地に行って長年暮らしたりすれば変わるかもしれないけれど、そんな環境に身を置くことは今現在の私にはまず無理な話である。
そんなときに耳にしたのがトマティスメソッドである。聴覚トレーニングで耳の聞き取りをよくし、さらに発音も改善するというのだ。「へえ、そんな方法があるのかな、なんだか怪しげ」と思ったものの、発音をよくするにはまず耳をよくするという考え方に惹かれた。ぜひ一度試してみたいと思っていたのが、幸いにも体験会に参加する機会を得られた。そして実際やってみることで耳が変わりうるのだと強く実感したのだった。さらにヘッドフォンをつけていたのはほんの数分だったのだが、その日１日はなんだか英語がよく聞き取れるような感じがしたのである。後でそれはどうも聴覚トレーニングの残留効果だったらしいことわかった。
体験会からしばらくして私は新たに英語を教える機会を得て、それまでより英語を話す場面がかなり増えた。改めて自分の英語を聞いてみると、やはりまだまだ日本人英語である。生徒さんの中には発音だけとってみれば私より上手いなあと感じる人がいたりして、ますます情けない思いがつのる。ネイティブ並みとはいかなくても、もっと英語らしい発音を身につけたいという思いが心の中で膨らんでいった。こんな経緯で、夏休みを利用してその効果を実際に体験したトマティスメソッドのトレーニングを受けてみようと決心したのだった。
トマティスメソッドはどのように生まれたか
さてトマティスメソッドの体験談を書き進めるのに先だって、ここでこのメソッドの概略について私なりに説明してみたい。私の場合、まずトレーニングの経験が先にあって、その後でどうしてこうなったのかが知りたくて自分なりに本を読んだりして勉強してみた。まだまだ理解が及ばず、よく消化されていない点も多々あるが、私なりの理解で書いてみることにする。
トマティスメソッドを生み出したのはフランス人のアルフレッド・トマティス博士である。2001年の12月末に81歳でお亡くなりになったのは実に残念なことである。博士は耳鼻咽喉科の医師として、騒音の中で長時間過ごしたために職業性難聴になった患者の治療に携わるうちに、耳の障害によって発声にも変化が現われることに気づいた。耳で聞こえなくなった周波数帯域は患者の声からも失われてしまうのである。このことからトマティス博士は「音声には、耳が聞いたもの以外は含まれない」という第一の原理を導き出した。
さらにトマティス博士は損傷を受けた耳の聞き取りを回復させる機械「電子耳」を開発し、難聴や発声障害の治療に成功した。この経験から、第二、第三の原理を導き出した。
第二の原理――「損傷を受けた耳が、欠落した周波数を正しく聞けるように導いてやると、その周波数は発声においても瞬間的にかつ無意識に修復される」
第三の原理――「一定期間、聴覚刺激を与えると、残留効果により被験者の自己聴取姿勢が、またその結果として被験者の発声が変化する」
つまり「電子耳」を使ったトレーニングによって耳がそれまで聞けなかった周波数を聞けるように訓練することが可能であり、それによって発声も変化すること、さらに訓練を一定期間継続すれば聴覚と発声の変化が定着することを博士は明らかにしたのだった。この考え方を外国語の習得に応用したのがトマティスメソッドなのである。
なぜ外国語の習得が容易になるか
人間は誕生直後にはすべての言語音を区別する能力をもって生まれてくるのだが、短期間のうちに母語の音韻体系に含まれる音だけを区別するようになる。このような体系がいったん作り上げられてしまうと、外国語の音は聞こえていても聞き分けることができなくなるのだ。
このようになるのは人間の耳のしくみによる。人間の耳は中耳の働きよって聞きとろうとする音に対して聴覚のスペクトルをズームさせるようになっている。中耳にあるふたつの筋肉「鼓膜張筋」と「あぶみ骨筋」は、耳に入ってくる音を増幅したり弱めたりする働きをもっている。ある特定の言語を話すようになると、これらの筋肉はある一定の音に対してしか反応しなくなり、その言語特有の音だけを選ぶようになるのだ。
トマティス博士はいくつかの言語の音声を分析することによって、言語によって優先的に使用される周波数音域があることに気づき、この周波数域をその言語の「パスバンド」としてグラフに表した。日本語のパスバンドは125～1500ヘルツであるのに対し、イギリス英語では2000~12000ヘルツ、米語では800~3500ヘルツ、ドイツ語では100～3000ヘルツの周波数帯が優先的に使われている。ある言語を話すようになると、その言語に優先的に使われている周波数帯の音に対しては自動的に聞き取れるようになるが、それ以外の周波数域の音は聞こえていても聞き分けることができなくなってしまうのだ。
たとえば日本語話者が英語を習得しようした場合、英語の音声は聞こえても言語音として聞き分けることができないのである。低いパスバンドを利用している日本語話者の耳に聞こえる英語は、母音と子音の基になる音の部分（基音）だけで倍音部分が聞き取れない、特に意味の主要部分を担う子音、破裂音や摩擦音の高周波部分が欠落してしまう。そのために日本語話者は英語の音声の聞こえた部分だけを日本語の音韻体系を用いて処理するので、その習得には大変な困難が伴う。たとえて言えば、スキーを習う際に、スティックやスキー板のようなギアの一部を身につけないままで、うまく滑れるようになろうとするようなものだろう。
トマティスメソッドでは、難聴の治療をおこなうのと同じように、電子耳を使った聴覚トレーニングによって、このような聞き取れない周波数域を聞き取り可能にし、聴覚だけでなく発声のしかたも変え、新たな神経回路の体制を整えさせる。この方法によって日本語話者は、英語を聞き取る聴覚とその英語を聞こえたままに発声する回路を獲得することができる。このような聞き取り発声の回路を持つということは、母語を習得するための聴覚の条件付けを目標言語について再び獲得したのと同じことになり、その後の目標言語の習得は非常に容易になるとされている。
以上ごく簡単にトマティスメソッドがどういうものかをまとめてみたが、では実際のトレーニングはどのように進んでいったかを記してみたい。
いざ、トレーニング開始
私が受講を決めたのは１週間の集中コースである。何でも最初はきちんとまるごと体験してみたい私としては、一番レギュラーなコースを選びたかったのだが、如何せんトマティスのセンターはとても自宅から通える距離にない。自宅から離れてとなるとごく短期のコースを取るしかなかった。正規のコースは毎日2時間のトレーニングを15日間を継続した後、3週間のお休み、その後2時間×8日間で全部で46時間というのが最もスタンダードなスタイルである。それ以外にもこの基本形を多少変えた週3回2ヶ月コースなどのバリエーションがある。私が受けたクラッシュコースは、毎日4時間×6日間、4時間のうち聴覚トレーニングが2時間と英会話が2時間（ただし聴覚トレーニング用のヘッドフォンをつけておこなう）、計24時間である。正規コースの約半分の時間で全体を圧縮しておこなうようなコースらしいので、ちゃんと効果がでるかが一番の気がかりであった。
さて第1日目。トレーニングスタート前になにかやっておくことがあるかと早めにセンターについたが、特にありませんとの返事。初めて来たところはついあちこち見たくなる。センターの中にはそこここに「星の王子さま」のきれいな絵が掲げられていて、全体に落ち着いた雰囲気だ。フロアの一角には聴覚トレーニングをおこなう1m四方の小さなボックスが20ほど並んでいる。それぞれドアのついた小部屋なのだが、完全な防音をされているのではなく、外からの音がそこはかとなくはいってくる。そんな自然な音の環境でおこなう訓練なのだ。聴覚トレーニング受講にあたっての注意が書かれたパンフレットには、トレーニング中は眠っていてもかまわない、絵を描いたりパズルや手仕事はいいが、飲食や本を読んだりするのは控えるようにと書かれてある。
1時になるとカウンセラーさんが「今日は1日目ですね。最初の30分は普通の音声で『星の王子さま』を朗読したものを聞いてもらいます。次がモーツアルト、3つ目が『星の王子さま』の1000ヘルツ以下をカットした朗読、最後は2000ヘルツ以下カットのものです。○番にお入りください」と言われ、ジグソーパズルを持っていそいそとボックスの中に入る。ボックスの中には作りつけの棚のような机と小さな明り、机上にはヘッドフォンとリピート練習用のマイクが備え付けられている。椅子はごく普通のもので、居眠りするにはちょっと固そう。小さな鏡も置かれていて、これはあとでわかったがリピート練習の時、口の形を確認しながら声をだすためのものだ。ヘッドフォンはくれぐれも左右を間違えないように、またバイブレーターがしっかり頭のてっぺんに当たるようにと指示される。
最初の朗読は普通の音声なので、内容を聞かないように努めながらもなんとなく聞いてしまう。『星の王子さま』はたしか子どものころ邦訳で読んだことがあるはずだが、話の内容ははっきりとは覚えていない。英語版も最初の方を読んだ覚えがある。主人公がゾウを飲みこんだウワバミの絵を大人に見せると、「そいつぁ、帽子だ」と言われるという冒頭のエピソードはなかなか好きだった。「大人は何でも説明してやらなくちゃわからない」という言葉は子どもの私には小気味よかったものだ。"Once when I was six years old, I saw a magnificent picture in a book." という出だし部分もどういうわけだか覚えている。へえ、結構面白い話だ、後で本屋に行って英語版を手に入れよう。30分で読める分量は初めの部分だけだ。途中でプツンと終わってしまって話の続きが知りたいなと思う。
次の30分はモーツアルトの音楽。音楽オンチの私には（というか別にほんとの音痴で歌がまったくだめということではない）何の曲だかさっぱりわからないが、とても気持ちがいい。いい気分で聞き始めたら、途中で何だか変な感じだ。高音部が伸びていかない。この音楽もそのままではなく何か音処理がされているのだ。気分よく曲にのったところで、加工された部分が際立って耳に入ってくるので、音楽を純粋に楽しむとはいかないようだ。久々に音楽をゆっくり聞いたところで、再度『星の王子さま』である。今度は1000ヘルツ以下カットだそうだが、前の話の続きを聞けるのかなと思っていたら、また最初の同じ部分だ。な～んだ、同じところを何回も聞くんだとちょっとがっかりしたものの、別に英語の童話を聞きにここに来たわけではないのだと気を取り直す。
2回目なのでできるだけ聞かないようにするのは簡単だ。もってきたジグソーは気がのらず早々に切り上げて、机の下に入っていた色鉛筆と紙を使って絵を描くことにする。聞いていて心に浮かんだものを素直に描けばいいらしい、色も聞いている時のイメージで選ぶのだ。色はやっぱり好きなブルーかな、水の中に泡みたいな渦巻きみたいなものが浮かぶ様子を描きはじめる。話の内容に集中しないように努めつつも、ついおもしろい言い回しのところは聞いてしまう。3回目の朗読も2000ヘルツカットとはいえ、まだ聞き取れるので、3べんも同じ話だとちょっと退屈。でも退屈してイヤになってはいけないと、せっせと絵を描き続ける。きれいな色をぬっているととても楽しい。小さなころはぬりえが好きで、近所の雑貨屋さんでよく買ってもらっては一日でぬりあげてしまうことも珍しくなかったなあ。「もうぬったの」という母の顔や、部屋の片隅に塗り終えたノートが１メートルも積み上げたあったっけとずいぶん昔のことを懐かしく思い出す。トレーニングが終わったころには、絵は何枚にもなっていた。この絵はトレーニングの進捗状況を見る資料になるそうなので勝手に持って帰るわけにはいかない。何枚もあったのでカウンセラーさんに渡すのがちょっと気恥ずかしかった。
短い休憩の後は、2時間の英会話のレッスンである。このレッスン中も聴覚トレーニングに使うヘッドフォンはつけたままで、自分の声も他の人の声もヘッドフォンから流れてくる。インストラクターはジャックさん、アメリカ人で本業は建築家、とてもフレンドリーな人である。生徒は私以外にもう一人Ｋさん、会社を定年退職後さっそくトマティスの聴覚トレーニングを受けることにしたという熱心な人である。長年海外で仕事をされてきた経験があるそうだ。英会話のレッスンなんて久しぶりだ。適切な単語や言い回しがすっとは出てこないだろうと思ったが、案の定である。このレッスンは特に決められたカリキュラムがあるわけではなく、よくあるフリー・カンバセーションスタイルで、短音レベルの発音練習もやってくれるという。
とはいえ発音練習は正直言って嫌いだ。日本にいるネイティブスピーカーの英語教師で音声学までちゃんと修めている人はなかなかいないから、生徒が出す音がいいか、悪いかは聞き分けられても、どうやってその音を出すかをちゃんと生徒ができるまで指導しきれる人はめったにない。しかも発音の一番の課題は、教わる側が音が聞き分けられるように、たとえば[ｒ]と[ｌ]が区別できるようにすることである。先生がそれでＯＫと言っても、発音している本人が自分の出している音の違いがよくわからないままなら、発音練習をいくらやっても意味がない。でも今回は聴覚トレーニングをやりながらだから、違ってくるかもしれないとちょっと期待する。
最初の時間は概ね各人の自己紹介という内容だった。ジャックさん自身も日本語のプログラムでトマティスのトレーニングを受けたことがあるそうだ。「どうでしたか、効果がありましたか？」と勢いこんで尋ねると、「確かにあった、まず声が変わった、歌声もずいぶん変わった」と言う。日本語を話す時は、唇を動かさないようにと注意されるのだそうだ。レッスン中びっくりしたのは、話を聞いている途中で突然、耳が変化したことだ。なんというか、それまで耳をベールが被っていたのが、そのベールが突然すっと落ちたような感じだった。驚きのあまりしばらく口がきけなかった。少したってからようやく「今、耳が変わったみたい」と話すと「1日目からそんな変化があるとはすごい」と言われた。自分自身でもこんなにはっきり変化を感じられるのはすごくうれしい。初日でこうなら、これからどうなるだろうと期待が高まった。
変わっていく耳と声に感動
2日目は『星の王子さま』の朗読を4000ヘルツカット、6000ヘルツカット、童謡、最後は朗読を低い周波数カットから次第にカットする周波数をあげていく処理をしたものを聞いた。もう人間の声には聞こえず、シュシュシュシュと耳元でささやかれている感じでなかなか気分がいい。今日も絵をどんどん描く。何もない宇宙空間や水中を漂っているような雰囲気の絵だ。英会話のレッスンが終わってヘッドフォンを外すと、自分の出す声が以前より明らかに振動しているのが感じられて、話をするのがおもしろい。よく通る声になった感じで、帰ってからも朗読をして声の変化を楽しんだ。ＢＳ放送で洋画をやっていたので試しに見てみると、なんだか聞こえが変わった感じ。以前より細かな音まで拾える。
これまでにもリスニングが急によくなって英語がよく聞こえるようになる、いわゆる「ブレイクスル－」というのを何回か経験しているが、それとは質が違っている。これまでの体験は話している「内容」がよくわかるというものだった。今回は意味がよくとれるようになったのではなく、音そのものが細部まではっきりするのだ。気をよくして、たまたまやっていた海外ドラマにも挑戦。普段ならわからなくてなってしまって途中で止めたりする番組だったが、結構話の筋が追っていける。2日目でこの変化はできすぎである。
3日目。今日から聞えてきた英文をそのまま繰り返すリピート練習が入るので、聴覚トレーニングの前に発声のやり方を教わる。まず姿勢から、やや前かがみになって、顎を引き首にできるだけ近づける。唇を前に突き出し、下唇を前に押し出すように音を出す。舌で下の歯を押すようにするとよい。下唇を出すのがなかなか難しい。いっしょに受けているＫさんはすぐスムーズにできるようになるが、私は口を引き出しのようにあけるのができなくて何回もやってみる。でもこの方法だと口にも舌にもずっと力がはいる。
以前から、自分でも英語を話すときは日本語に較べて、唇や口の周辺部の緊張状態がずっと高いこと、また口腔内の前方部分で音を作ることには気がついていたが、その緊張状態をどうやったら維持できるのかわからないでいた。意識して話している時はいいが、すぐに元にもどって日本語を話すときの口と同じになってしまう。このように唇を突き出せば緊張状態も音の作る場所も維持できる。ごく短い時間だったがすごく役に立つ発音指導だった。
3日目のトレーニングの構成は、8000ヘルツカットの朗読、モーツアルト、低周波カットから高周波カットへ上げていく朗読、そしてリピーティング練習である。リピート練習の時は備えてある鏡を見ながら、うんと口を突き出して発音してみる。リピートする英語自体はとても簡単なものだが、個々の音もちゃんとだそうと心がけると口がスムーズには動かない。ヘッドフォンから聞えてくる自分の声も以前より英語らしく聞える感じだ。今日描いた絵はちょっと色のトーンが暖色系に変わってきて、大きな渦巻きやスペークを描く。音を聞いていると、頭の中で音がすごい速さで移動するのが感じられる。右耳から左耳を経て頭のてっぺんに、フラッシュのように「シュッ」「シュッ」と動いていく。何とも変な感じだが、これが耳が変わっているしるしなのだろう。
リピート練習の時のフレーズに、"Good Afternoon, Jack." というフレーズがあったので、英会話のレッスンの最初に、Ｋさんがさっき教わった口の形どおりに"Good Afternoon, Jack." と言ったのが何ともおかしい。会話の時にも口を突き出そうと努めたが話の内容に集中すると、ついお留守になる。これは練習して条件反射的になるようにしないといけないなと思う。帰ってからは口を突き出した形で英語をいろいろ言ってみる。" right" と"light"を発音してみると、自分の作る[ｒ]と[ｌ]の音がはっきり違って聞える。[ｒ]は舌をカールるさせるようにして、[ｌ]は上の歯茎の後ろに下をつけて発音するという方法はわかっていても、自分の作る音が確かに違うとこんなにはっきり思えたのは初めてだ。日本語的に平たい口で"glass" "cup"と発音するのと、口を突き出して発音するのを比べてみると、口を突き出した方が明らかに英語らしく聞えるのにも感心した。やや興奮気味でいろいろな音を出してみる。海外ドラマを見て、またまたよく聞こえるので気分がいい。もっと英語が聞きたいのに、ソースが手元にないのでちょっと残念だ。
4日目から６日目にかけては、8000ヘルツカットの朗読を6000ヘルツ、4000ヘルツ、2000ヘルツ、1000ヘルツカットと通常の音にもどしていく。描いている絵は建物の絵だったり、山の牧場に人がいる絵だったり、描くものが変わってきて、全体にカラフルになったようだ。音楽の外に、リピート練習が毎日30分はあるので、鏡を見ながら、口を突き出す。英会話のレッスンでは、教育や昨今の世相なかなか内容の濃い話になっていった。Ｋさんはお仕事関係の話をされるときは特に流暢である。発音練習でも最初よりずっと出す音が明瞭になってきたとジャックさんがほめてくれた。耳が変わってきたおかげで自分でもそう実感できるので素直にうれしい。英語を話すこと自体に抵抗がなくなっていく。たぶん英語を聞き話すような環境に一定期間身を置くことができれば、スピーキングはずっと向上するのだろうなと思う。ジャックさんが書いてくれたエバリュエーションでも日常的に話す機会を得るようにすると向上するだろうとアドバイスしてあった。毎回話が終わってヘッドフォンを外すと、しばらくの間自分の声がびんびん響く感じでおかしかった。
再度発声をするときの姿勢や口の形を教わる。その姿勢で「あー」と言ってみてくださいと指示されて、おそるおそる出してみると、「あら、すごい。ちゃんと出てますよ」と言われる。本人は何のことやらよくわからないが、「骨導音」が出ているのだそうだ。以前よりも自分の声がずっと響き、よく通る感じを実感していたが、どうもその変化らしい。さらにカウンセラーさん自身が音を出してみせてくれた。びっくりしたことに、その音だけで彼女の回りの空気がびんびん震えるのだ。すごい、すごい！感激屋の私は感動してちょっと目がウルウルしてしまった。耳や声の変化を定着させるには、事後トレーニングとして毎日30分の朗読を100日ぐらい続けてくださいと言われ、絶対やるぞと心に誓う。「12月には発声トレーニング（ＣＡＶ）があるので、興味があれば是非ご参加くださいね、声が本当に変わりますよ」と言われ、もうやってみたくてしかたがなくなった。
聴覚トレーニングで私が得たのは
さて、この6日間のトレーニングでどんな効果があったかをまとめてみよう。
当初クラッシュコースでちゃんと効果がでるかが一番の心配だったが、そんな心配は杞憂に終わり、私の場合は1日目から耳の変化が現われはじめ、毎日変わっていく感じがしてとてもワクワクした１週間だった。英語の聞こえが確実に変わったので、夜は洋画や海外ドラマを見て「おー、聞こえる、聞こえる」と確認して喜んだり、自分の声が以前よりも響きがよくなり、よく通る感じがして音読を楽しんだりした。
１週間のコースが終了した後、感じた大きな変化は、まず何と言っても細部まで明確に英語が聞こえるようになったことである。近視で眼鏡をかけずにいてぼんやり見えていたのが、眼鏡をかけたらはっきり見えるようになってビックリという感覚に近い。聞きとりが容易になるので英語をつい聞きたくなってしまうというおまけまでついた。私の場合、聞こえなかったのがよく聞こえるようになったというのは、いままで文脈や文法的な知識で聞こえない部分を予測や推測で補っていたのが、細部まで意識しなくてもよく聞こえてしまうという感じなのだ。たとえば複数や三単現のｓの音、過去の語尾のedの音、今まで聞えないのを文法的に考えて聞えなくても聞いているみたいに自分に思い込ませていたのが、そんな補いをしなくてもそのまま聞えるのである。さらに音のつかみが大きくなったというか、一息で話される単語のひとまとまりがスポンとまるごと入ってくる感じになったのだ。
また自分の声が以前よりもよく響くようになり、声を出すのが楽になった。それ以外にも、私は音楽をあまり聞かない方だったのだが、音楽を聞いていると身体に快の感覚がはっきりと湧くようになったのはびっくりしたものだ。スピーカの前に立って両腕を広げて身体全体で音を受けるようにすると、本当に気持ちがいい。家人は音楽好きなのだが、どうして音楽が聞きたくなるのかその理由が初めてわかったような気がした。音楽を聞いていると単純に気持ちがいい、これが一番の理由なのだ。聴覚トレーニングのおかげで、私も音楽のもつリラックス効果に対して開かれた状態になり、よい影響を受け易くなったのである。
あと自分の声を余裕をもって聞きながら話すことができるので、言い間違いや言いよどみが減り、終わりまではっきり話せるようになったようだ。語学のトレーニングだと思って受けたのに、リラクゼーションの副次効果が高いのにも驚いた。実はこのことに一番感心したのではないかと思う。特に終わってから2週間ぐらいはこれまで気に病んでいたことがすっかり洗い流された気分でネガティブなことを考えない、というか考えられない状態で、ウキウキした感じだった。
聴覚トレーニングが終わった後、事後トレーニングとして耳や声の変化の定着を図るため自宅で毎日30分ほど朗読をすることが勧められた。3ヶ月ほど続けるとよいと言われたとおり、毎日早朝30分間英語を読むようにした。本当は母語、つまり日本語でやるらしいのだが、英語を話す時の突き出した口の形をなんとか身体に覚えさせたいと思って、英語のリピート練習にした。何事も条件反射的に身体に覚えさせるには最低100回は繰りかえす必要がある。これは英語がうまくなりたいと思って懸命に練習した時、実体験からわかったことだ。そのとおり、毎日鏡を見ながら口を突き出しながら英語を言う練習は100日続けた。
さらにこれまではどちらかというと苦手だった映画やドラマの英語に耳を慣らしたいと思い、毎週放送されているアメリカのシットコムを毎朝30分見ることにした。録画した同じエピソードを1週間の間繰り返して見るのだが、2、3回聞くと全体が本当によくわかるようになる。なかなかわからないところはかなり正確に音が拾えるので綴りの見当をつけて辞書を引くと知らない単語や言い回しだったのがわかる。最後までどうしてもわからないところが何ヶ所かは残るが、これほど音声的にきれいにわかることは今まではなかったことだ。この方法で毎日聞いていると、6日目、７日目ごろには耳で聞いたせりふをそのまま繰り返してリピーティングができるようになってきた。ひとりで30分しゃべり続けるのは大変なので、休みを入れながらだが、文全体のリズムやイントネーションもより英語らしく自然になってよい練習方法である。以前はたぶんやろうとしてもできなかったことだ。
毎朝1時間ほど早起きをして練習するので睡眠時間が以前より減ってしまったが、この練習を続けていた3ヶ月ほどはむしろ身体が疲れにくい感じがしたのは不思議だった。朗読練習のおかげかどうかはよくわからないのだが、一般に朗読そのものにリラクゼーション効果があることは知られているらしい。
９月になり新学期を向かえてからは、英語の授業でもだいぶ気後れせず英語が話せるようになっていた。英語だけでなく、日本語で話す場合も声を出すこと自体がずいぶん楽で、リラックスして話せるようになった。しかも人と話す時には、伝えたいことが以前よりうまく伝わっている感じがしたのもうれしいことだった。「人生変わった」というのは大袈裟かもしれないが、トマティスのトレーニングで今後の暮らしをよりよくする手段を私は確実に手にしたのである。
